Blue Moon Tavern
The Blue Moon Forever
In April 1934, after the end of the Prohibition, twenty one year old Hank Reverman opened The Blue Moon Tavern in Seattle's University District. By the 1950’s it had become a haven for beatnicks, writers, intellects, feminists, and student radicals while often drawing the contempt of conservative Seattle. The original sign of the woman in a bathing suit can be found in the back of the 1971 addition to the tavern on the stage where musicians and bands still come to play. The Blue Moon survived a threat to be demolished in 1989 which resulted in a fifty year lease until 2034. Gus Hellthaler has owned the bar since 1982.
