Outrigger canoe racing has survived from ancient Polynesian tradition to become one of the most popular Hawaiian team sports, and for almost 90 years, the Big Island's Kai 'Opua Canoe Club has been preserving that time-honored practice. Teams range in ability from groups of novices to world champions, with activities for enthusiasts of all ages and levels. Now in its 35th year, Kaiopua is also host to "The Queen Lili'uokalani" the world's largest long distance outrigger canoe race.
