When Hisashi Kimura, heir to his family's general store, married Irene, a seamstress and quilter, they added fabric to their extensive list of products. As the big supermarkets came to Kona and the folks with store credit passed on, the grocery and hardware sides of the business were phased out, making more room for fabric. Three generations later, Kimura's is now a world-renowned fabric mecca drawing locals and tourists alike. With over 10,000 bolts in stock, from burlap to wedding silks, a fabric lover can never walk away empty-handed. The main attraction: Hawaiian tropical prints and some charming Japanese fabrics. Still a family business after 70 years, Irene and Hisashi's children, Winnie and Brian, run the store and keep track of each and every notion and bolt.
